The Open Source Project

Purpose

This section is intended to freely give every individual all the necessary tools and education to produce and distribute your own equipment. Our corporate mission revolves around empowering individuals. We aim to create a network where people can share designs and ideas. By pairing this philosophy with in-home manufacturing, in the future, we aim to reduce scarcity of goods.

If you have not yet seen, Zeitgeist: Moving Forward, it is a film about the detriments scarcity has on society. Check it out:

System

Linux: Ubuntu

Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and distributed as free and open source software. The vision for Ubuntu is part social and part economic: free software, available free of charge to everybody on the same terms, and funded through a portfolio of services provided by Canonical. Ubuntu holds an estimated global usage of more than 12 million desktop users, making it the most popular desktop Linux distribution with about 50% of Linux desktop marketshare.

Octave

GNU Octave is a high-level interpreted language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides capabilities for the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear problems, and for performing other numerical experiments. It also provides extensive graphics capabilities for data visualization and manipulation. Octave is built to look like MATLAB, and the only difference is how it handles strings (MATLAB uses single quotes and Octave uses double quotes).

Here's a movie about the evolution of the Linux operating system:

Tools

RepRap

RepRap is a desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap can print those parts, RepRap is a self-replicating machine - one that anyone can build given time and materials. RepRap's software is free, and the parts that it cannot self-replicate are available as relatively inexpensive kits.
